The Lone Star Lowdown: 10 Texas Laws to Know Before Making the Move

by Gena Dowell

So, you've decided to embrace the allure of Texas, where the skies are vast and the BBQ is legendary. That's an exciting step, partner! But, every state has its unique rules and quirks. To help you feel right at home, we've put together ten Texas laws that you'll need to know before you mosey on down to the Lone Star State:

  1. Straight Shooting on Gun Laws: In Texas, anyone over 21, who's legally allowed to own a firearm, can carry a handgun openly or concealed, no permit necessary. That's about as relaxed as a cowboy in a saloon.

  2. Your Homestead, Your Sanctuary: Here, your home is your fortress. Creditors typically can't push for the sale of your home to settle debts. Few exceptions do apply, like if you default on your mortgage or owe taxes.

  3. Sunday Sips: Fancy a tipple on Sunday morning? Hold your horses! You'll need to wait until noon to buy beer or wine, and liquor sales are off-limits all Sunday. And forget Christmas Day, New Year's Day, or Thanksgiving for alcohol shopping.

  4. Roadworthy Rundown: Each year, your car needs a safety inspection or a 'check-up'. And if you're in certain counties, your vehicle's emissions will need a clean bill of health, too.

  5. Employment Equilibrium: Being a "right-to-work" state means you can't be denied a job based on your decision to join (or not join) a labor union. It's all up to you.

  6. Castle Doctrine in Action: If an intruder tries to break into your occupied home, car, or workplace, Texas law is on your side. You can use deadly force to protect yourself.

  7. Tax Breaks: You're in for a treat - no state income tax in Texas! But remember, the state balances the books with higher property and sales taxes.

  8. Driving Distraction-Free: Texting while driving? That's outlawed. And hands-free is the only way to go in school zones.

  9. The Skinny on Marijuana: As of my last update in 2021, recreational marijuana is still off-limits in Texas. A limited medical marijuana program does exist, though.

  10. Voting Verification: Come voting time, you'll need to present one of the approved forms of photo ID. But if you don't have one, there are still other options.

Now that you're up to speed on these key local laws, you're on your way to fitting right into your new Texan lifestyle. Welcome to the Lone Star State, future Texan!
